Unit Description

This unit caters for those who wish to develop skills relevant to teaching drama in primary schools or in community arts contexts. It will explore a range of dramatic forms and performance styles such as mime, movement, mask, puppetry, playbuilding, and improvisation. An emphasis will be placed on building confidence in these aspects of drama by learning and applying specific techniques in a pedagogical context.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate a practical and theoretical understanding of a range of dramatic forms relevant to teaching primary school drama;
  2. demonstrate an ability to design and implement lesson sequences using knowledge of the drama syllabus;
  3. demonstrate an understanding of how students learn in drama and the contribution that drama makes to students? personal, social, and intellectual development;
  4. demonstrate an understanding of how to create an effective learning environment in drama;
  5. demonstrate an ability to employ a wide range of teaching strategies and resources; and
  6. demonstrate research-based knowledge of relevant literature in relation to content knowledge and pedagogical models.
