Unit Description

This unit will provide a model for integration in and through the Arts within the broader school curriculum, specifically the Drama, Music, Visual Arts and Dance strands of the creative arts syllabus. Students will advance their knowledge and skills within the individual arts strands as well as begin to form a personal teaching philosophy in regards to their future teaching of the Arts. Furthermore, students in this unit will begin to appreciate the commonalities that help to bind the arts and explore methods for structuring cross-disciplinary teaching and learning.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. integrate the elements of Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts Education into teaching/learning experiences appropriate for K-6 classrooms;
  2. further develop and practice skills, techniques and knowledge unique to each of the Creative Arts strands;
  3. investigate the ways that the Creative Arts can accommodate individual learning styles and needs in the classroom;
  4. develop a more complete understanding of the aims, objectives and outcomes of the K-6 Creative Arts syllabus relevant to their own state;
  5. articulate the role of Creative Arts education as an integrating force across the curriculum; and
  6. articulate the role of the Creative Arts as a positive force for humanities education.

The students are assessed in their first assignment to look at the global perspectives for teaching creative arts in the primary classroom.
