Unit Description

This unit outlines economic and social transformations in Asia and analyses the prospects for continuated economic growth in the region. It explores the success of Japan and East Asia, and identifies the general issues common to all the industrialising economies. It analyses the role and interaction of the state and the market in economic development and examines the historical and economic forces that led these countries to adopt market-oriented reforms. It provides a detailed study of industrialisation strategies, manufacturing labour systems, and women workers. The unit also explores the environmental and social impacts of resource development in Asia.

compare the divergent experiences of Japan, the NICs, the second-tier NICs, China and India;
develop a critical understanding of the relationships between economy, society and political processes;
evaluate the role of women workers in the manufacturing sector;
demmonstrate an understanding of the role of major Asian countries in the global economy;
evaluate the social and environmental impacts of resource development in Asia.
