Unit Description

This unit examines the economic and social transformation of Southeast Asia in the context of globalisation and the integration of the region into the international economy. It familiarises students with the major countries of the region: Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and surveys the development of particular economic sectors in selected countries. These include agriculture (rice, rubber); mining and manufacturing. The unit also explores demographic change, the international division of labour, changing labour relations, industrialisation, and the social and environmental impacts of resource development in Southeast Asia.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand the political, economic and socio-cultural diversities of Southeast Asia in the 19th century;
  2. identify the factors responsible for the economic transformation of Southeast Asia between 1870-1940;
  3. understand the greater integration of Southeast Asia into the global economy and how this integration led to the international division of labour;
  4. evaluate Southeast Asia's links with the international economy in the post-World War II period;
  5. demmonstrate and understanding of trade policies, industrialisation strategies and the principal reasons for the ascendancy of the newly-industrialising countries in the last three decades of the 20th century;
  6. evaluate the connection between economic growth and resource development on the state of the environment
