Off-campus students attend a 3.5 day Mandatory Intensive School held at the Australian Cotton Research Institute in July-August. The unit exam in an open book style held on the final day of the intensive school.

Unit Description

This unit examines the management of insect pests, weeds and diseases that affect cotton crops. The scientific basis for their management is discussed as well as practical, sustainable methods for their control. Identification, thresholds, integrated control mechanisms of all cotton pests are discussed. Students are required to complete a practical session totalling 3.5 days at the Australian Cotton Research Institute, Narrabri.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify the main pests, weeds and diseases of cotton crops, discuss their management, identification, ecology and relationship to each other;
  2. understand the principles behind the protection of cotton crops from arthropod pests, weeds and diseases;
  3. understand Integrated Pest Management (IPM): the effective combination of pesticides and biological control measures in the management of pests in cotton systems;
  4. understand what is involved in the correct set up of a spray rig for pesticide application;
  5. appreciate the environmental implications of pesticide applications;and
  6. explain in some detail several case studies of pest problems of cotton crops in Australia.
