Unit Description

This unit provides students with an introduction to feminist film analysis, and a feminist perspective on a range of mainstream films which represent and/or explore the representation of women. Students will study each film text in relation to a particular issue, and along with a specified piece of theoretical and analytical writing. Some of the films studied are: 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'; 'Aliens'; 'Vertigo'; 'The Piano'; 'Orlando' and 'Silence of the Lambs'.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand, apply and reflect on key theories and terms developed in film analysis;
  2. analyse and interpret sequences from a range of feature films with reference to the visual and aural components of the mise-en-scene;
  3. understand feminist perspectives in film theory and critiques of mainstream cinema texts;
  4. identify and discuss, at an advanced conceptual level, issues in cinematic representations of women in particular social and cultural contexts;
  5. conduct independent research and analysis in an area of feminist film scholarship.

Students will be able to demonstrate awareness of the historical development of feminist perspectives in film theory, and this will be formally assessed in both set assessment tasks.

In addition, this is evidenced in their interpretation of and responses to the visual and aural communication components of film. Students also listen to and interpret discussion and information on audio tapes. On-campus students have the additional components of verbal communication in discussions and oral presentations.
