Unit Description

This unit builds on the work undertaken in CLLA101, and focuses increasingly on the reading of ancient texts. Candidates must remain in the language strand already selected in CLLA101, either Greek or Latin. By the end of the unit students will have read a considerable amount of selected Greek or Latin texts, and improved their command of the language.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. apply basic reading skills to more advanced Greek and Latin texts
  2. focus upon reading skills and read extended narrative passage in the original Greek and Latin;
  3. analyse how Greek and Roman authors use language to express ideas.

Students will be taught communication skills through written and oral feedback on the assessments and participation component of the unit. Students studying on-campus will learn valuable communication skills through participation in tutorials. Off campus students will practice their communication skills through online discussions on blackboard.

Students will be taught, and directed, to relevant texts and how to assess its validity. Students will be assessed (through the selected texts) on their ability to identify relevant literature, and on their ability to critically analyse the literature.

Through completing the assessments, students will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write and discuss social issues. These skills can be transferred to any discipline, and will be useful in any research positions. These attributes will be assessed in all of the assessments.
