Unit Description

This unit explores 'cultural globalisation' in Asia (China, Indonesia or Japan) through the lens of mass-mediated popular culture (pop music, comics/cartoons, television drama). While it is often assumed that cultural globalisation leads to cultural convergence or homogenisation (typically, in the direction of Euro-American models), cultural inflows are, in fact, often articulated locally and new products created. Thus, rather than producing homogeneity, cultural globalisation may instead lead to the formation of 'cultural hybrids' that better conform to the tastes and expectations of the local audience. Indeed, for popular culture at least, the process of globalisation may be characterised more by 'hybridisation' than 'homogenisation'.
