Unit Description

This unit explores the principal modes of cultural expression in modern China, Indonesia, and Japan. Lectures will discuss literature, cinema, and other cultural forms in those countries. Students will be introduced to the concept of art as social practice and to the skills necessary for critical analysis. All materials will be in English.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand the role of cultural activity in the three countries studied;
  2. display a deeper knowledge of the functioning of the respective societies, the importance of cultural practices, and of the way in which ideas and values are expressed through creative endeavour;
  3. increasingly contextualise language use (Asian language students);
  4. critically examine cultural practices, to discuss influences upon them, and their relevance to society;
  5. demonstrate a closer and more meaningful engagement with Asia.
