Unit Description

Designed for students who have studied at least three years of Chinese, this unit explores in Chinese the story of Chinese culture, covering topics ranging from aspects of Chinese everyday life to the social system, religion, philosophy, literature and arts. Through this unit, students will refine and develop their linguistic expression in Chinese. They will also acquire deeper understanding of and familiarity with the heritage of Chinese culture, together with its influence on contemporary life in China.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate competence in reading and understanding selected discursive texts written for a Chinese readership;
  2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of some major elements shaping Chinese cultural tradition;
  3. write an essay or an analytical paper of 600-700 Chinese characters in length, on a topic relating to Chinese cultural tradition;
  4. demonstrate understanding of Chinese academic referencing conventions.
