Unit Description

This unit is open both to students learning Chinese, and to those of Chinese heritage, and also to those who have no knowledge of the language but are attracted to Chinese calligraphy. Lectures cover materials, basic brush skills, styles, and the history of Chinese calligraphy. There are weekly practical workshops, and the unit culminates in an exhibition of student work.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. appreciate a major Chinese art form;
  2. display essential knowledge of the history and development of Chinese calligraphy;
  3. understand the basic brush skills and styles of Chinese calligraphy;
  4. demonstrate a practical ability to write Chinese characters by brush;
  5. recognize and remember an increased number of Chinese characters (language students only);
  6. understand the structure of Chinese writing (language students only).
