Unit Description

This unit follows on from CHIN201, and is designed to complete students' basic grounding in Modern Standard Chinese. Speaking, listening, reading and writing skills are further developed, as are students' skills and strategies as a language learner. A situational approach is employed to develop functional fluency in a variety of contexts, and attention is paid to the socio-cultural aspects of language use.

Learning Outcomes (LO)

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

use Chinese appropriately in a variety of contexts relating to daily life and personal expression;
demonstrate improving speaking and listening skills;
recognise and use simple forms of most of the major grammatical structures of Chinese;
recognise and write at least 1000 words in Chinese characters;
accurately translate simple texts from Chinese to English, and sentences from English to Chinese;
show awareness and use of a variety of skills and strategies as a language learner.

1	Knowledge of a Discipline This unit enhances students' knowledge of Modern Standard Chinese by developing their listening, speaking and writing skills through theory and practice.
2	Communication Skills Students' communication skills will be enhanced by learning how to communicate appropriately at the elementary level in Chinese in a variety of situations. In addition, group discussions online will help to develop their communication skills.
3	Global Perspectives Since learning Chinese language gives students an opportunity to learn about Chinese culture and society, this unit will enhance their global perspective.
4	Information Literacy The online component of this unit will give students the chance to practise and improve their information technology skills.
5	Life-Long Learning The Chinese language units at UNE are presented in a way that aims to develop students' confidence and skills as a language learner. CHIN202 aims to help them to take a step further on the long-term journey towards an understanding of Chinese language and culture.
6	Problem Solving Learning how to use a new language involves problem-solving as well as logical thinking and creative thinking.
7	Social Responsibility By developing students' intercultural awareness this unit will also develop their social responsibility.
8	Team Work Teamwork is involved in in-class group activities for on-campus students and for off-campus students at the Intensive School, and the online discussions encourage a high level of group awareness and support.
