Unit Description

This introductory unit gives students a basic foundation for their study of Modern Standard Chinese. It provides essential grounding in the pronunciation and tonal structure of Chinese, and in the patterns of the language. Students will become familiar with the pinyin romanisation system as well as learning the fundamental principles of writing and reading Chinese characters. They will learn how to participate in simple conversations in Chinese, and will gain a practical understanding of the basic grammatical concepts.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. participate in simple conversations in Chinese on topics relating to self, family and study;
  2. recognise and produce the tones of Modern Standard Chinese;
  3. accurately use the pinyin system of romanisation;
  4. explain the principles of the Chinese character writing system;
  5. recognise and write approximately 120 basic Chinese characters;
  6. recognise a further 130 Chinese words and phrases.
