Unit Description

This unit will apply elements of biophysics to biological systems as applied to health and forensic science. Students will be introduced to a broad range of topics such as: diagnostic tools used in medical imaging (such as X-rays, MRI and radionuclide imaging); protein interactions at the molecular level (using proteomics and fluorescence spectroscopy); as well as fluid dynamics and cardiovascular function. BIOP520 is based on BIOP320 with additional assessment tasks requiring a greater depth of understanding of the material.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of and explain the various tools used in diagnostic imaging;
  2. demonstrate an understanding of and explain the significance of selected fluorescence spectroscopy methodologies used to investigate disease at a molecular level;
  3. demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of cardiovascular pressure, resistance and flows and appreciate the principles of operation of techniques used to assess these variables;
  4. conduct a thorough review of a current research topic in one of the above areas and to present the results in the format of a scientific paper.
