The unit is concerned with the use of management accounting information in planning and control decisions. Topics include: introduction to basic management accounting concepts; break-even analysis, cost estimation; application of these costs in short term and long term decision-making; introduction to innovations in management control systems..

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. improve their report writing skill. Some of the tutorial questions require application of spreadsheet;
  2. enhance management of information, research, reasoning and problem solving skills;
  3. improve critical reasoning. The supplementary readings, which are incorporated, will enhance the capacity to evaluate and react to new ideas and ethical dimensions of the profession. Students will understand and explain the current developments in management accounting, particularly the role of management accounting in the new technological environment;
  4. develop an awareness of both ethical and environmental aspects of the management accounting function. This awareness will help students think and act independently and will help them to tolerate ambiguity;
  5. present, discuss and defend their views in tutorials and in the assignments. Collaboration with fellow students is encouraged however, students are reminded that assignments must be their own works.
