Master of Urban and Regional Planning

Why study the Master of Urban and Regional Planning at UNE?

The Master of Urban and Regional Planning offers a thorough grounding in urban and regional planning both to graduates wishing to enter the profession and to practising professionals wishing to upgrade their knowledge.

Besides acquiring knowledge and necessary skills, for their professional accreditation, graduates will be in high demand and will be able to access employment opportunities within and outside Australia.

Students complete two semesters of coursework (48 credit points) followed by one semester of research (24 credit points) in which the student will undertake a full-semester research dissertation.

Entry Requirements

An applicant for admission to the degree shall hold:

(a) a bachelor degree from a recognised university in a discipline related to the built environment including architecture, planning, environment, or geography;

(b) the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of New England or equivalent qualification from a recognised university and attained at least a Credit average in 48 credit points.

International students from non-English speaking countries require evidence of English proficiency such as TOEFL (550) or IELTS (Overall 6; subtests 5.5).

Note: Students will be required to maintain a credit-average (or higher) to be eligible to proceed to the research component of the course.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing is not granted for units taken to meet course admission requirements (except for an approved articulation in the course).

Advanced standing will be permissible for the core coursework units only, to a maximum of 48 credit points. Candidates admitted via the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning may be granted a maximum of 48 credit points for core units in the MUrbRegPlan.

No advanced standing will be granted for the Dissertation unit GEPL500.

Admission to Candidature

An applicant for admission to the degree shall hold:

(b) the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of New England or equivalent qualification from a recognised university and attained at least a Credit average in 48 credit points.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing is not granted for units taken to meet course admission requirements (except for an approved articulation in the course).
Advanced standing will be permissible for the core coursework units only, to a maximum of 48 credit points. Candidates admitted via the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning may be granted a maximum of 48 credit points for core units in the MUrbRegPlan.
No advanced standing will be granted for the Dissertation unit GEPL500.

Period of Candidature

The maximum period of candidature shall be:
(a) 1.5 years as a full-time candidate;
(b) 3 years as a part-time candidate.

Program of Study

To qualify for the award a candidate shall complete a total of 72 credit points consisting of 48 credit points coursework and 24 credit points research dissertation.

Candidates shall complete an approved program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:

Exit Pathways

Students who complete the core units in the Master of Urban and Regional Planning (48 credit points) can exit to the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning at this point and by completing an additional 24 credit points of coursework in place of the dissertation be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning.
