Master of Teaching (Primary)

Why study the Master of Teaching (Primary) at UNE?

The Master of Teaching (Primary) is a two-year graduate entry initial teacher education program for pre-service primary teachers. The program is informed by the latest research and contains (i) foundational studies in the social context of schooling, Aboriginal education, teaching students from non-English speaking backgrounds, teaching and learning, inclusive and special education, classroom behaviour management, literacy education and ICT across the curriculum (ii) eight curriculum methods units and (iii) 60 days of professional experience, which includes the option of undertaking professional experience in an international setting.

Students who have been admitted to on campus study may be required to take some units in off campus mode.

Teacher Registration: Students should note that teacher registration requirements vary from state to state. UNE bases its degree structures on the NSW Institute of Teachers' guidelines for teacher registration. This program has been submitted to the NSW Institute of Teachers for approval.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall hold a relevant degree of a university.

Overarching Guidelines

Minimum study in a relevant undergraduate (and appropriate postgraduate) degree/s is determined as 8 units of discipline knowledge related to Key Learning Areas (KLAs):

· EITHER one full academic year (two semester units) of study in four key learning areas

· OR two full academic years (four semester units) of study in one key learning area and one full academic year (two semester units) of study in two other key learning areas.

English KLA: communications; creative writing; English with a strong core component of study of English literature; language studies; linguistics (may only be counted for one KLA); literature studies; media studies (ie the theoretical study of media or where the product is a literary text). Mathematics KLA: pure or applied mathematics; one unit only of statistics may be counted provided it was studied as a stand-alone unit; other studies of mathematics that are relevant to the central concepts, modes of enquiry and structure of the content/ discipline(s); Science and Technology KLA: agriculture; architecture (2 units only may be counted); biology; bio-technology; chemistry; computing studies; design - interior, industrial, graphic, fashion, product, landscape (2 units only may be counted); engineering (chemical, mechanical, civil, electrical, environmental); food technology; geology; materials science; media production; medicine; nursing; physics; psychology (may only be counted for one KLA); Human Society and Its Environment KLA: Aboriginal studies; anthropology; archaeology; Asian or Pacific studies; business studies; cultural studies; economic history; economics; environmental/land use studies; futures studies; geography; government and citizenship; history; industrial relations; languages, including Aboriginal languages; linguistics (may only be counted for one KLA); legal studies; psychology (may only be counted for one KLA); political science; sociology; Creative and Practical Arts KLA: dance including practical experience in choreography and performance in several dance styles and dance history/theory; drama including experiential involvement in making and performing drama; music including performing (singing, playing and moving), listening and organising sound (composing) within a wide range of repertoire; visual arts including art making and art history/theory; PDHPE KLA:physical education studies; health studies; family studies; health promotion; human movement studies; nutrition education; sports science

Applicants who are 12 credit points short of meeting the prerequisite for KLA discipline knowledge units may be permitted to enrol in that specific discipline units provided they enrol concurrently in the appropriate prerequisite unit or units. All prerequisites must be passed prior to or concurrently with Master of Teaching (Primary) candidature.

Additional Requirements

Prohibited Employment Declaration and Probity Checks: In response to the New South Wales Department of Education and Training's legal obligations in respect to the Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 and the Child Protection (prohibited Employment) Act 1998, the University has guidelines regarding students undertaking field experience. All students are required to declare whether they are a prohibited person by completing a Prohibited Employment Declaration.

English Language Proficiency

For admission to Education courses conferring the right to apply for Australian Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) at least one of the following criteria must be met:

1. English is the student's first language;

2. An IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least 7.5 with a minimum score of 8.0 in Speaking and Listening and 7.0 in Reading and Writing.

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

Professional Experience that collectively provides the 60 days of professional experience mandated by DEEWR (formerly DEST) in 2007 is embedded in the course.

Advanced Standing

Transition Arrangements

Students required to transfer into the Master of Teaching (Primary) from the existing Bachelor of Teaching (Primary), as per the transition arrangements will automatically receive Advanced Standing for all units successfully completed provided that sufficient credit points remain in their programs of study to enable NSWIT requirements to be met.

Other Advanced Standing

In addition to providing Advanced Standing for students involved in transition arrangements:

· There shall be no maximum to credit granted on the basis of education units completed at UNE which have not already counted to a completed qualification.

· Credit granted on the basis of units which have already counted to any single award shall not exceed one quarter of the credit points required for the M. Teach (Primary).

· Credit granted for education units successfully completed at other institutions for awards that have not been completed may be granted a maximum of 67% of the total credit points for the M. Teach (Primary).

All rerequisites must be passed prior to or concurrently with Master of Teaching (Primary) candidature.

In addition, the New South Wales Department of Education and Training has introduced probity (criminal history) checks for all student teachers participating in unsupervised situations with school students. Education Queensland and the ACT Department of Education require probity checks for all students undertaking any school experience in Queensland or the ACT. Probity checks may be carried out prior to students undertaking any school experience. Candidates should be aware that they will be subject to probity checks on behalf of potential employers after completing the course and prior to receiving clearance to function as an independent classroom teacher.
