Master of Professional Accounting

Why study the Master of Professional Accounting at UNE?

This award is a conversion course that will enable students to gain professional qualifications in accounting. The course is open to graduates but non graduates may enter following successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Accounting with a grade point average of five. The course covers introductory as well as advanced units in financial and management accounting, finance, tax and company law and auditing. On successful completion graduates can apply for Associate Membership of the Professional Accounting Organisations. The course is accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, CPA Australia and the National Institute of Accountants.

Career Opportunities

Students who complete this award will be eligible for Associate membership of CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA) or the National Institute of Accountants (NIA). They can then pursue full professional status with the organisation of their choice.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Professional Accounting shall:

(a) have fulfilled all the requirements for admission to a degree or recognised qualification of equivalent standing at this or another university or tertiary institution; or

(b) have completed the Graduate Certificate in Accounting or any relevant graduate certificate as approved by the Course Coordinator with a minimum grade point average of five; or

(c) have completed the Graduate Diploma in Accounting or any graduate diploma as approved by the Course Coordinator.

Additional Requirements

Applicants will need to supply:

Certified Copies of academic transcripts

Certified Copies of evidence of identification

Evidence of English Language Proficiency if applicable

A Personal Statement outlining key items:

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing is available for other postgraduate study that has a reasonable correspondence with units prescribed for this degree.

Fast Track

The trimester system allows students to study over three teaching periods within the calendar year. Trimesters run from late January to April; mid May to late August and beginning of September to mid-December.

1 Admission to Candidature
1.1. Applicants for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Professional Accounting shall:
(a) have fulfilled all the requirements for admission to a degree or qualification of equivalent standing at this or another university or tertiary institution; or
(b) have completed the Graduate Certificate in Accounting or any graduate certificate as approved by the course coordinator; or
(c) have completed the Graduate Diploma in Accounting or any graduate diploma as approved by the course coordinator.

1.2. An applicant for candidature shall apply to the Program Director on the prescribed form.

1.3. Admission to candidature and the date of commencement of candidature shall be determined by the school.

2. Requirements for the Master of Professional Accounting
2.1. To satisfy the requirements for the Master of Professional Accounting, a candidate shall complete a program of study approved by the course coordinator.

2.2. Except with the permission of the course coordinator the course work program shall include the following GSB units amounting to 72 credit points comprising: GSB 644, 641, 642, 701, 703, 711, 728, 741, 743, 748, 749, 750.

3. Period of Candidature
3.1. Candidates shall complete the prescribed course work program in not more than three years of full-time study and not more than six years of part-time study. There will be three 15-week trimesters in each calendar year.

3.2. In exceptional circumstances, the school may on the recommendation of the course coordinator:
(a) grant leave of absence from candidature; or
(b) extend the period of candidature.

4. Advanced Standing
4.1. At the discretion of the school on the recommendation of the course coordinator, a candidate may be granted advanced standing for:
(a) up to 36 credit points on the basis of units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another university provided they have a reasonable degree of correspondence to units prescribed for the course work program and, if the candidate does not have a first degree; provided a minimum of Credit grade average is achieved in such units to the value of 24 credit points; or
(b) up to 36 credit points on the basis of postgraduate units that have not been counted towards any qualification provided they have a reasonable degree of correspondence to units prescribed for the course work program; or
(c) up to 24 credit points for other significant learning or work experience which the school considers equivalent to units prescribed for the course work program; or
(d) up to 24 credit points for units completed towards the Graduate Certificate in Accounting or an appropriate Graduate Certificate and, if the candidate does not have a first degree, provided a minimum of Credit grade average is achieved in these units.

4.2. The total amount of advanced standing under Rule 4.1. will not exceed 36 credit points.

4.3 At the discretion of the school on the recommendation of the course coordinator, a candidate may be granted advanced standing for up to 48 credit points for units completed towards the Graduate Diploma in Accounting or equivalent at this University and not otherwise counted towards the Master of Professional Accounting.

5. Award of the Master of Professional Accounting
A successful candidate shall be awarded the Master of Professional Accounting at the level of Pass.

6. Exit Pathways
Graduate Diploma in Accounting: Candidates who enrol in the Master of Professional Accounting and complete 48 credit points from units specified in Rule 2.2. may apply to exit with a Graduate Diploma in Accounting. Such graduates who then wish to complete the Master of Professional Accounting must re-apply for admission.
Graduate Certificate in Accounting: Candidates who enrol in the Master of Professional Accounting and complete 24 credit points from units specified in Rule 2.2. may apply to exit with a Graduate Certificate in Accounting. Such graduates who then wish to complete the Master of Professional Accounting must re-apply for admission.
