Overview

The Master of Information Systems (Extended) is a course work only program suitable for graduates from areas such as business and commerce who do not want to be software developers.

Entry Requirements

A three-year bachelor degree which for international students must be equivalent to a three-year Australian Bachelor degree. Prior knowledge of computing science and mathematics is not required.

Applicants with other qualifications and relevant experience will also be considered.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing is not granted for units taken to meet course admission requirements (except for an approved articulation in the course).

The maximum advanced standing shall be for units counting 48 credit points which are deemed to be equivalent to units offered by the University and approved for the course comprising:

(a) 24 credit points for units completed towards an awarded Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in a relevant area offered by the University; or

(b) 48 credit points for units completed towards an awarded Bachelor degree in a relevant area; or

(c) 24 credit points for units completed from another institution and not counted towards an awarded qualification; or

(d) 12 credit points for units completed towards an awarded qualification from another University; or

(e) 6 credit points on the basis of considerable professional experience.

Articulation from the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology and the Master of Information Systems:

On completion of the Graduate Diploma, students are able to articulate to the Master of Information Systems (Extended) with 48 credit points advanced standing for units completed towards the Graduate Diploma.

On completion of the Master of Information Systems, students are able to articulate to the Master of Information Systems (Extended) with 72 credit points advanced standing for units completed towards the Master.

The Master of Information Systems (Extended) has been granted Professional-level accreditation by the Australian Computer Society.

These Course Rules & Plans are ONLY to be used if you Commenced, Transferred or Changed Versions in the Master of Information Systems (Extended) in 2010.

Admission Requirement
1. A candidate shall:
(a) have fulfilled all of the requirements for admission to a Bachelor degree in the University; or
(b) have fulfilled all of the requirements for admission to a degree or other qualification acceptable to the school as sufficient qualification for candidature; or
(c) have satisfied the school by means of qualifications and/or experience, that adequate preparation for candidature has been made.

2. A candidate who has been recommended for the award of the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology may be permitted to transfer to candidature for the degree of Master of Information Systems (Extended).

3. A candidate for the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology who has completed units counting 24 credit points and who has a satisfactory academic record may be permitted to transfer to candidature for the degree of Master of Information Systems (Extended).

4. A candidate who has been recommended for the award of the Master of Information Systems may be permitted to transfer to candidature for the degree of Master of Information Systems (Extended). If candidature for the Master of Information Systems (Extended) is successful, the Master of Information Systems will not be awarded.

5. Admission to candidature and the date of commencement of the candidature shall be determined by the school on the recommendation of the course coordinator.

Credit Point Requirements
To qualify for the award a candidate shall complete a total of 96 credit points.

Program of Study
Candidates shall complete an approved program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:

Period of Candidature
The period of candidature shall be:
(a) two years as a full-time candidate;
(b) five years as a part-time candidate.

Where the prescribed course of study has been reduced in terms of Admission Rule 2, 3 or 4, the period of candidature may be reduced accordingly.

In exceptional circumstances and on the basis of written evidence the school may extend the periods of candidature.

Exit Pathways
Candidates who discontinue their studies may be eligible to exit on completion of 24 credit points with the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology or the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology on completion of 48 credit points.
