Why study the Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) at UNE?
Applied Linguistics is a field which explores how language functions in the world, first and second language acquisition and intercultural communication. This online degree will appeal to students wanting a professionally relevant higher qualification who do not have a background in Linguistics, as well as those considering postgraduate careers in the growing fields of Applied Linguistics and TESOL. The degree is fully on-line using Discussion boards and other web-based resources. This online format allows all Masters students to participate equally, regardless of geographic location. The Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) is primarily a coursework degree. The standard program consists of eight 400-level units each worth six credit points. Students may also be able to undertake 12 credit points of research (LING490) Graduates who have completed 25 per cent of the program with a dissertation unit (12 credit points) may be eligible to apply for the Doctor of Philosophy.

| Entry Requirements | Applicants should hold a degree from a recognised university. Any qualified student will be able to enrol. They must also have access to the world wide web and a computer with a CD-ROM drive. International students from non-English speaking countries require evidence of English proficiency such as TOEFL(550) or IELTS (overall 6; subtests 5.5). |

| Advanced Standing | At the discretion of the school, a candidate may be granted advanced standing towards the degree. Advanced standing is not granted for units taken to meet course admission requirements (except for an approved articulation in the course). A candidate may be granted advanced standing to a maximum of 12 credit points on the basis of units passed at this or another institution provided they have reasonable correspondence to units of course work available towards the degree. Applications for advanced standing may be considered on the basis of professional experience under the Advanced Standing Policy 2.15. |

1. Admission to Candidature
1.1. Admission to candidature shall be determined by the school on the recommendation of the course coordinator.
1.2. An applicant for admission to candidature shall have fulfilled all the requirements for a degree of Bachelor of the University or shall have fulfilled the requirements for a degree or qualification of equivalent standing at another university or institution recognised by the school for this purpose.
1.3. Candidates must have access to the www and access to a computer with a CD-ROM drive. Minimum computing requirements apply and will be updated regularly.
2. Course Requirements
2.1. To qualify for the award of Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) a candidate shall pass units to the value of 48 credit points at 400 level approved by the course coordinator.
2.2. Except with the permission of the course coordinator, units shall be selected from 400-level units, in accordance with the following schedule. A candidate must undertake all units in Group I, except when prevented from doing so by the operation of Rule 2.3.
Group I: LING 450, 451, 452, 453
Group II: EDLA 423; LING 405, 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466, 467, 468, 469, 480, 490
2.3. The course coordinator may determine that a candidate not be permitted to enrol in any unit or units from Group I or Group II where, in the opinion of the course coordinator, the candidate has undertaken equivalent subject matter in a previous award.
2.4. With the permission of the course coordinator, a candidate may substitute Group II units in place of Group I units, up to a value of 12 credit points.
2.5. In special circumstances, and with the permission of the course coordinator, a candidate may substitute other units at 400-level or equivalent offered within the university for prescribed Group II units in Rule 2.2., up to the value of 12 credit points.
3. Period of Candidature
3.1.(a) The expected period of candidature for full-time candidates to complete requirements is two semesters.
(b) Part-time candidates shall complete requirements in not more than eight semesters.
3.2. Where a candidate has been granted advanced standing towards the degree, the school may reduce proportionately the period of candidature.
4. Advanced Standing
4.1. At the discretion of the school, a candidate may be granted advanced standing towards the degree.
4.2. Advanced standing is not granted for units taken to meet course admission requirements (except for an approved articulation in the course).
