1. Requirements for the Degree
1.1. A candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours shall complete a final honours course in one of the following fields of study: Archaeology, Animal Science, Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Ecology, Genetics, Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Marine Science and Management, Mathematics, Microbiology, Nutrition, Physics, Physiology, Psychology, Zoology, or in such other field of study as the faculty may approve.
1.2. A final honours course is a unit of fourth-year standard related to a field of study listed in Rule 1.1 and selected from ARPA401H and ARPA402H, BCHM400, BOTY400, CHEM400, COMP400, ECOL400, GENE400, GEPL401H and GEPL402H, GEOL400, MSM400, MATH400, MICR400, HUMN400, PHYS400, PSIO400, PSYC401H and PSYC402H, ZOOL400. The examinations may include tests of reading knowledge of two foreign languages. The course may include units counting up to 12 credit points from the Rules governing the degree of Bachelor of Science or other courses offered in the University and approved by the relevant school. Each unit shall count for not more than five per cent of the assessment and workload for the final honours course.
1.3. A candidate shall complete the final honours course within two consecutive semesters from admission unless the relevant school approves of completion within two years. There shall be no re-examination.
2. Admission to Final Honours Course
2.1. Admission to a final honours course shall be at the discretion of the head of the school concerned and subject to the provisions of Rule 2.2.
2.2. (a) Except as provided in Rule 2.2.(b) and (c), a candidate for admission to a final honours course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours, shall have:
(i) fulfilled the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science; or
(ii) completed units to the value of 144 credit points, including the Bachelor of Science component, of the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science, or of the Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Laws or of the Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Teaching; and shall have completed appropriate units.
(b) The head of the school concerned may approve for admission to a final honours course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours a candidate who has fulfilled the requirements for an appropriate degree or other qualification of equivalent standing at another university or other institution recognised by the school for this purpose. The school may require additional evidence which will be specified in each case of the ability of such a candidate to undertake a final honours course in the school concerned.
(c) With the approval of the school a candidate who has completed at least 36 cps of 300- or 400-level units, including 12 cps from units other than ARPA, GEPL and PSYC units, chosen from units listed in Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 of the Bachelor of Science or at any other institution approved by the school for this purpose, other units equivalent to those additional units specified for the degree of Bachelor of Science may be admitted to candidature for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours.
2.3. (a) Normally, candidature for the degree shall commence at the beginning of the year following that in which the candidate qualifies in terms of Rule 2.2.
(b) Candidature may be commenced later than one year on the approval of the course coordinator and on the recommendation of the head of school concerned.
2.4. A student admitted in terms of Rule 2.2.(a)(ii) shall not be eligible for the award of the Bachelor of Science with Honours until the relevant combined or double degrees program has been completed.
3. Classes of Honours
3.1. There shall be three classes of honours, namely Class I, Class II and Class III. Class II shall have two divisions, namely Division 1 and Division 2.
3.2. In each school the candidate or candidates at the head of Class I in any year may, if of sufficient distinction, be awarded a University Medal.
3.3. Unless determined otherwise by the Board of Examiners in exceptional circumstances, the award of all honours grades shall be determined at the meeting of the Board of Examiners immediately following candidates' completion of two semesters of candidature (or four semesters of candidature in the case of candidates permitted to complete the final Honours unit within two years) or, in the case of candidates granted special examinations, at the next succeeding meeting of the Board of Examiners.
4. Double Honours
A candidate who has qualified for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours may enrol for the final honours course in a second field of study. Provided that the first unit was completed within one academic year and the second unit is completed in the academic year immediately following that in which the first unit was completed, the candidate shall be eligible for consideration for the award of a University Medal in accordance with Rule 3.2.
A candidate who has qualified for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours in one subject and who proposes to pursue a second honours course shall postpone graduation until the outcome of the second honours course is known.
For candidates studying Full-Time = 48 cps per year or 24 cps per semester. This equates to a workload of approximately 40-48 hours per week.
For candidates studying Part-Time = 24 cps per year or 12 cps per semester. This equates to a workload of approximately 20-24 hours per week.
