1. Requirements for the Degree
1.1. A candidate shall complete a final honours course in one of the fields of study encompassed by the course work programs listed in Bachelor of Environmental Science Rule 3 (pre-2008).
1.2. A final honours course is a unit of fourth-year standard bearing the numerical designation 400. The course may include units counting up to 12 credit points from Groups 2 or 3 of the rules governing the degree of Bachelor of Environmental Science (pre 2008) or other courses offered in the University and approved by the school. Each unit shall count for not more than five per cent of the assessment and workload for the final honours course.
1.3. A candidate shall complete the final honours course within two consecutive semesters from admission unless the school approves of completion within two years. There shall be no re-examination.
2. Admission to Final Honours Course
2.1. Admission to a final honours course shall be at the discretion of the head of school and subject to the provisions of Rule 1.2.
2.2. (a) Except as provided in Rule 2.2.(b) and (c), a candidate for admission to a final honours course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Environmental Science with Honours shall have fulfilled the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Environmental Science (pre 2008) and shall have completed a Group 3 unit appropriate to the proposed field of study.
(b) The head of the school may approve for admission to a final honours course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Environmental Science with Honours a candidate who has fulfilled the requirements for an appropriate degree or other qualification of equivalent standing at another university or other institution recognised by the school for this purpose. The school may require additional evidence which will be specified in each case of the ability of such a candidate to undertake a final honours course in the school concerned.
(c) With the approval of the school a candidate who has completed, within the faculty, appropriate units from Group 3 (pre 2008) with a value of at least 36 credit points of the Bachelor of Environmental Science (pre 2008) and who has completed within the University or at any other institution approved by the school for this purpose, other units equivalent to those additional units specified in the degree of Bachelor of Environmental Science (pre 2008) may be admitted to candidature for the degree of Bachelor of Environmental Science with Honours.
2.3. Normally, candidature for the degree shall commence at the beginning of the year following that in which the candidate qualifies in terms of Rule 2.2. Candidature may be commenced at other times only with the approval of the head of school.
3. Classes of Honours
3.1. There shall be three classes of honours, namely Class I, Class II and Class III. Class II shall have two divisions, namely Division 1 and Division 2.
3.2. In each school the candidate or candidates at the head of Class I in any year may, if of sufficient distinction, be awarded a University Medal.
3.3. Unless determined otherwise by the Board of Examiners in exceptional circumstances, the award of all honours grades shall be determined at the meeting of the Board of Examiners immediately following candidates' completion of two semesters of candidature (or four semesters of candidature in the case of candidates permitted to complete the final honours course within two years) or, in the case of candidates granted special or concessional examinations, at the next succeeding meeting of the Board of Examiners.
For candidates studying Full-Time = 48 cps per year or 24 cps per semester. This equates to a workload of approximately 40-48 hours per week.
For candidates studying Part-Time = 24 cps per year or 12 cps per semester. This equates to a workload of approximately 20-24 hours per week.
