The Bachelor of Archaeology with Honours offers a broad training in archaeology and palaeoanthropology suitable for students intending to pursue a career in these disciplines. The degree provides students with theoretical knowledge and practical fieldwork experience. The degree programme focuses on the systematic study of the entire human past, via the excavation, analysis and interpretation of the artefactual, human, and associated material remains. Includes instruction in archaeological theory, field methods, dating methods, the ethical and professional context of archaeology, cultural and physical evolution, and the study of specific selected past cultures.
Career Opportunities
Graduates work in the heritage and tourism industries, and the environmental, development and planning sectors. Archaeologists are cultural heritage managers, curators, academics, consultants and indigenous land claim officers. Employers include Australian Heritage Council, Department of Environment and Water Resources, Roads and Traffic Authority, large mining companies and private planning consultants.

Exit Pathways
Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Bachelor of Arts on completion of 144 credit points.
Progression Requirement
To continue in the course a candidate must meet the following progress requirements:
(a)
at least two Distinction grades in each year of study for full-time candidates;
(b) at least one Distinction grade in each year of study for a part-time candidate;
(c) Credit grade level or better in all other units.
Before enrolment in unit ARPA401H, candidates must have satisfied all other requirements for the degree. Enrolment in ARPA401H, if a part-time candidate, or ARPA401H and ARPA402H, if a full-time candidate, should take place in the year following satisfaction of all other requirements of the course except under exceptional circumstances when the course coordinator may grant permission to delay such enrolment by up to one year.
Award of Honours
1. There shall be three classes of honours, namely Class I, Class II, and Class III. Class II shall have two divisions.
2. An exceptionally distinguished candidate who has been awarded First Class Honours may be awarded a University Medal.
Advanced Standing
Advanced Standing shall not be granted for units ARPA401H or ARPA402H.
Requirements for fourth year (ARPA401H and ARPA402H)
1.(a) ARPA401H shall comprise course work to the value of 24 credit points at 400 level; and
(b) ARPA402H shall comprise a 24 credit point research study.
2. A full-time candidate shall complete the requirements of ARPA401H and ARPA402H in one year.
3. A part-time candidate shall complete the requirements of ARPA401H in the first year and ARPA402H in the second year. Part-time candidates shall pass ARPA401H before being permitted to enrol in ARPA402H.
4. A full-time candidate may be granted special leave by the Executive Dean to re-enrol in a subsequent year if he or she withdraws from ARPA401H and 402H by 31 August.
5. A part-time candidate may withdraw from candidature up to 31 August in her or his first year of enrolment without prejudice to the right to re-enrol in a succeeding year.
6. A part-time candidate who withdraws later than 31 August in her or his second year of enrolment but prior to two months before the submission of the empirical research report may re-enrol in ARPA402H provided that:
(a) two years will have elapsed before such re-enrolment;
(b) the topic of study for the research empirical report is different from that of the original enrolment.
7. A candidate who withdraws later than two months prior to the date on which the empirical research report is required shall be deemed to have failed.
Suspensions and Extensions to Candidature
The faculty may grant an extension or suspension of candidature, or a combination of both, to full-time candidates for up to six months or to part-time candidates for up to 12 months as follows:
(a) to compensate by way of extension of candidature, a candidate for time lost by ill-health or unforeseeable and unavoidable difficulties; or
(b) to compensate by way of suspension of candidature, a candidate who produces evidence that he/she shall not be in a position to pursue work towards the Bachelor of Archaeology with Honours.
