The Graduate Diploma in Social Science is a program designed to add specialised training in the social sciences to an existing tertiary qualification. The existing qualification need not be in the Social Sciences. The Diploma can be used as an end in itself or to provide a student with the qualifications necessary to enter further study (e.g., an Honours fourth year of study) in a particular discipline. 1. Admission to Candidature
1.1. An applicant for admission to candidature for the Graduate Diploma shall either:
(a) have fulfilled all the requirements for admission to a degree of the University, or shall have fulfilled the requirements for a degree or qualification of equivalent standing at another university or institution recognised by the school for this purpose and accepted by the school as sufficient qualification for admission to the course; or
(b) be concurrently enrolled for a degree of the University and the Graduate Diploma provided that the degree enrolment comprises no more than 12 credit points remaining prior to the completion of all the degree requirements.
1.2. Candidates admitted under Rule 1.1.(b) shall have fulfilled all the requirements for admission to a degree before being awarded the Graduate Diploma.
2. Approval of Course of Study
After admission to candidature, a candidate shall have his or her course of study approved by the course coordinator.
3. Course Requirements
3.1. A candidate shall follow a course of studies comprising units equivalent to not less than 48 credit points and not more than 60 credit points.
3.2. (a) Except as provided in Rule 3.2.(b), all the units which a candidate must pass before being awarded the Graduate Diploma shall be from subjects listed in Rule 3.2.(d).
(b) In special cases and with the permission of the course coordinator, up to 12 credit points from subjects not included in 3.2.(d) may replace up to 12 credit points in a candidate's program where such replacement fits a special requirement of that program.
(c) Unless otherwise permitted by the school:
(i) if 48 credit points are in the course of studies all shall be at 200 level or higher, with at least 24 credit points at 300 or 400 level or above;
(ii) if units at 100 level are included in the course of study, candidates must successfully complete at least 48 credit points at 200, 300 or 400 level including at least 18 credit points at 300 or 400 level or above.
(d) Subjects: Ancient History, Archaeology and Palaeoanthropology, Asian Studies, Defence Studies, European Cultures, Film Studies, Gender Studies, Geography, History, Indigenous Studies, Islamic Studies, Linguistics, Media Studies, Peace Studies, Philosophy, Political and International Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Studies in Religion, Writing.
(e) Units in the following group are deemed to be the subject shown for the purposes of Rule 3.2.(d). Asian Studies includes all units listed in the Asian Studies major in the Bachelor of Arts, or any other unit approved by the relevant School Teaching and Learning Committee.
4. Period of Candidature
Unless otherwise permitted by the school, the candidate shall satisfy the requirements of Rule 3.1. and any concurrent degree requirements of Rule 1.2.(b):
(a) The expected period of candidature for full-time candidates to complete requirements is two semesters;
(b) Part-time candidates shall complete requirements in not more than eight semesters.
5. Award of the Graduate Diploma
Graduating students in the Graduate Diploma in Social Science who have successfully completed at least 48 credit points, including at least 12 credit points at 300 level in one subject or an approved course of study as determined by the School Teaching and Learning Committee in Rules 3.2.(d) and 3.2.(e) may request that the subject or approved course of study appear on their testamur.
