Why study the Graduate Diploma in Rural Science at UNE?
The Graduate Diploma in Rural Science is the second award level of a fully articulated program which gives qualified applicants the opportunity for study at progressive levels: Graduate Certificate in Rural Science, Graduate Diploma in Rural Science; Master of Agriculture or Master of Science in Agriculture.
The Graduate Diploma is Rural Science is designed to give graduates an opportunity to undertake specialised study in an area of agriculture.
Career Opportunities
There are opportunities in advisory roles in agricultural extension and property management working with State Departments of Primary Industry and private consultants providing advice on scientific, technical and economic matters.

| Benefits | Concurrent Enrolment with the Bachelor of Science: After completion of two years of study (96 credit points) towards the degree of Bachelor of Science, students may enrol concurrently for the Graduate Diploma in Rural Science. The Graduate Diploma will not be awarded until the Bachelor degree has been completed. Articulation from the Graduate Certificate in Rural Science: On completion of the Graduate Certificate, students are able to articulate to the Graduate Diploma. All units counted towards the Graduate Certificate will count towards the Graduate Diploma. Articulation to the Master of Agriculture: On completion of the Graduate Diploma, students are able to articulate to the Master of Agriculture with 24 credit points (no more than 12 credit points at undergraduate level) of advanced standing for units completed towards the Graduate Diploma. Articulation to the Master of Science in Agriculture: On completion of the Graduate Diploma, students are able to articulate to the Master of Science in Agriculture with 24 credit points of advanced standing for units completed towards the Graduate Diploma. Admission to candidature for the Master of Rural Science: On completion of the Graduate Diploma at the level of at least Pass with Distinction, students are able to apply for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Resource Science. The Master of Rural Science is a research-only degree. |

| Entry Requirements | The normal requirement for admission to candidature is a three Bachelor degree, preferably with a background in the basic sciences biology, chemistry and statistics. Applicants who have other qualifications and relevant professional experience will also be considered. |

| Advanced Standing | Advanced standing is not granted for units taken to meet course admission requirements (except for an approved articulation in the course). The maximum advanced standing shall be for units counting 24 credit points which are deemed to be equivalent to units offered by UNE and approved for the course comprising: (a) 24 credit points for units completed at UNE and not more than 12 credit points at undergraduate level; or (b) 24 credit points for units completed in NSW TAFE Graduate Vocational Certificate in Rural Extension and Community Development; or (c) 24 credit points for units completed from another institution and not counted towards an awarded qualification; or (d) 6 credit points on the basis of considerable professional experience. (e) There shall be no maximum advanced standing on the basis of units completed at this University that have not counted towards a qualification. (f) There shall be no advanced standing awarded for RUSC595. |

1.Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall:
(a) hold a bachelor degree from a recognised University in a discipline related to Agriculture or Rural Science; or
(b) hold at least 12 credit points towards the Graduate Certificate in Rural Science or equivalent; or
(c) satisfy the school by means of other qualifications and relevant experience of adequate preparation for candidature.
2. Course Requirements
UNE admitted students
To qualify for the award, a candidate shall pass 48 credit points at 200-level or above from the Elective Units or as approved by the course coordinator.
RUSC595 can be included in the study program, with Head of School approval, if the student has located a suitable supervisor for the project.
UNE admitted students program of study
OUA admitted students
To qualify for the award, a candidate shall pass 48 credit points from the following units:
(i) SOIL220; AGRO211; ANPR211; RSNR403 and
(ii) 24 credit points from GRNS300, AGRO321, AGRO422, AGRO311 or
(iii) 24 credit points from ANPR321, ANPR440, ANPR417, ANPR415.

3. Period of Candidature
The maximum period of candidature shall be:
(a) one year as a full-time candidate;
(b) four years as a part-time candidate;
(c) in exceptional circumstances and on the recommendation of the candidate's supervisor, the period of candidature may be extended.
4. Advanced Standing
Advanced standing is not granted for units taken to meet course admission requirements (except for an approved articulation in the course).
The maximum advanced standing shall be for units counting 24 credit points which are deemed to be equivalent to units offered by UNE and approved for the course comprising:
(a) 24 credit points for units completed at UNE, and not more than 12 credit points at undergraduate level; or
(b) 24 credit points for units in NSW TAFE Graduate Vocational Certificate in Rural Extension and Community Development; or
(c) 24 credit points for units completed from another institution and not counted towards an awarded qualification; or

5. Exit Pathways
On completion of 24 credit points, exit with the Graduate Certificate in Rural Science.
6. Award of Degree
A student who has successfully completed the unit RUSC595 within the study program will be awarded the Graduate Diploma at the level of Pass or Credit or Distinction or High Distinction.
A student who does not complete the unit RUSC595 within the study program will be awarded the Graduate Diploma at the level of Pass.
