On-campus study is completed at the National Marine Science Centre in Coffs Harbour, NSW (http://www.nmsc.edu.au/).

The course provides academic and professional training in some of the key topics in marine science and management. This includes updating the knowledge and skills of candidates who have previous training in this field. The qualification will be recognised in the market place as appropriate for managers dealing with marine and estuarine ecosystems.

Concurrent Enrolment with the Bachelor of Science:

After completion of two years of study (96 credit points) towards the degree of Bachelor of Science undertaken at this university, students may enrol concurrently for the Graduate Diploma in Science. The Graduate Diploma will not be awarded until the Bachelor degree has been completed.

Articulation from the Graduate Certificate in Marine Science and Management:

On completion of the Graduate Certificate, students are able to articulate to the Graduate Diploma. All units counted towards the Graduate Certificate will count towards the Graduate Diploma.

Articulation to the Master of Marine Science and Management:

On completion of the Graduate Diploma, students are able to articulare to the Master program with 24 credit points (no more than 12 credit points at undergraduate level) of advanced standing for units completed towards the Graduate Diploma.

Entry Requirements

The requirement for admission to candidature is a three-year Bachelor degree, preferably including chemistry, biology and statistics.

Applicants who have other qualifications and relevant professional experience will also be considered.

These Course Rules & Plans are ONLY to be used if you Commenced, Transferred or Changed Versions in the Graduate Diploma in Marine Science and Management in 2010.

1. Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall:
(a) hold a bachelor degree from a recognised University in a discipline related to Environmental Science or Environmental Management or Natural Resources; or
(b) hold at least 12 credit points towards the Graduate Certificate in Natural Resources or Marine Science and Management or equivalent; or
(c) satisfy the School by means of other qualifications and relevant experience of adequate preparation for candidature.

2. Course Requirements
To qualify for the award a candidate shall pass 48 credit points, including AQUA200; ECOL202/402, 203/403 and ZOOL210 and 24 credit points at 200-level or above from the Elective Units or as approved by the course coordinator.

NR595 can be included in the study program, with Head of School approval, if the student has located a suitable supervisor for the project.

3. Period of Candidature
The maximum period of candidature shall be:
(a) one year as a full-time candidate;
(b) four years as a part-time candidate;
(c) in exceptional circumstances and on the recommendation of the candidate's supervisor, the period of candidature may be extended.

4. Advanced Standing
The maximum advanced standing shall be for units counting 24 credit points which are deemed to be equivalent to units offered by UNE and approved for the course comprising:
(a) 24 credit points for units completed at UNE and not more than 12 credit points at undergraduate level; or
(b) 24 credit points for units completed from another institution and not counted towards an awarded qualification; or
(c) 6 credit points on the basis of considerable professional experience.
(d) There shall be no maximum advanced standing on the basis of units completed at this University that have not counted towards a qualification.

(e) Advanced standing shall not be awarded for NR595.

5. Exit Pathways
On completion of 24 credit points, exit with Graduate Certificate in Marine Science and Management.

6. Award of Degree
A student who has successfully completed the unit NR595 within the study program will be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Marine Science and Management at one of four levels, Pass, Credit, Distinction, High Distinction.

A student who does not complete one the unit NR595 within the study program will be awarded the Graduate Diploma at the level of Pass.
