Why study the Graduate Diploma in Accounting at UNE?
The Graduate Diploma in Accounting is a course that will service the needs of students requiring up to eight units for accreditation with the professional accounting bodies. It can serve as an entry and exit point for the Master of Professional Accounting. The course comprises eight units (that is 48 credit points) and is usually used to supplement existing studies in accounting to satisfy the entry requirements of the professional accounting organisations. Subjects are drawn from the Master of Professional Accounting and may cover introductory as well as advanced units in accounting, finance, systems, law, auditing, economics and business statistics. The course is accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, CPA Australia and the National Institute of Accountants.

The Graduate Diploma in Accounting is a course that will service the needs of students requiring eight or less units for accreditation with the professional accounting bodies. Once associate membership is obtained students can pursue the professional studies for full membership.

1. Admission to Candidature
1.1. This course is available on a fee-paying basis only.
1.2. An applicant for admission to candidature for the Graduate Diploma in Accounting shall:
(a) have fulfilled all the requirements for admission to a three-year degree or an equivalent qualification, acceptable to the school as sufficient qualification for admission to candidature; or
(b) have completed the Graduate Certificate in Accounting or other Graduate Certificate as approved by the Director, with a minimum grade point average of 5, normally in the first four units completed towards the Graduate Certificate.
1.3. In addition, applicants for admission to candidature under Rule 1.2.(b) must provide evidence of at least three years work experience in a field of employment approved by the school on the recommendation of the course coordinator.
1.4. An applicant for candidature shall apply to the Director on the prescribed form.
1.5. Admission to candidature and the date of commencement shall be determined by the school.
2. Approval of Course of Study
After admission to candidature, a candidate shall have a course of study approved by the school on the recommendation of the course coordinator.
3. Requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Accounting
3.1. To satisfy the requirements for the award of the Graduate Diploma in Accounting, a candidate shall complete the course work program approved by the course coordinator.
3.2. Except with the approval of the course coordinator, the course work program shall include units to the value of 48 credit points from the following: GSB 641, 642, 644, 701, 703, 711, 728, 741, 743, 748, 749, 750.
4. Period of Candidature
4.1. Candidates shall complete the prescribed course work program in not more than six trimesters of 15 weeks duration of full-time study and not more than 12 15-week trimesters of part-time study. There will be three 15-week trimesters in each calendar year.
4.2. In exceptional circumstances, the school may, on the recommendation of the course coordinator, extend the period of candidature for a period or periods totalling not more than four trimesters.
5. Advanced Standing
5.1. At the discretion of the school, on the recommendation of the course coordinator, a candidate may be granted advanced standing for:
(a) up to 24 credit points on the basis of units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another University provided they have a reasonable degree of correspondence to units prescribed for the course work program and, if the candidate does not have a first degree, provided a minimum of Credit grade average is achieved in such units to the value of 24 credit points; or
(b) up to 24 credit points on the basis of postgraduate units that have not been counted towards any qualification provided they have a reasonable degree of correspondence to units prescribed for the course work program; or
(c) up to 24 credit points for other significant learning which the school considers equivalent to units prescribed for the course work program, or
(d) up to 24 credit points for units completed towards the Graduate Certificate in Accounting or other Graduate Certificate approved by the Director and, if the candidate does not have a first degree, provided a minimum grade point average of 5 is achieved in these units.
5.2. The total amount of advanced standing under Rule 5.1. will not exceed 24 credit points.
6. Special Examinations and Special Extensions of Time
A special examination or special extension of time may be granted at the discretion of the school, on the recommendation of the course coordinator.
7. Examination Grades
To satisfy examiners candidates must achieve a grade of Pass, Credit, Distinction or High Distinction for units completed towards the Graduate Diploma in Accounting.
8.Withdrawal
A candidate who withdraws from a unit after the final date for withdrawal prescribed by the school shall be recorded as having withdrawn with failure from that unit unless good cause is shown by the candidate to the school.
9. Award of the Graduate Diploma
A successful candidate shall be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Accounting at the level of Pass.
10. Graduate Certificate in Accounting Exit Point
Candidates who enrol in the Graduate Diploma in Accounting and complete 24 credit points from units specified in Rule 3.2 may apply to exit with a Graduate Certificate in Accounting. Such graduates who then wish to complete the Graduate Diploma in Accounting must re-apply for admission.

Candidates are referred to the University Policy on Plagiarism and Academic Misconduct.
