Why study the Graduate Certificate in Writing at UNE?
This course suits people from diverse backgrounds who wish to gain advanced skills in Writing. Students have the opportunity to study and apply forms of organisational, administrative and corporate writing; writing for the media; and publishing and editing in different types of communication, including print and online. The course provides a thorough grounding in up to date methods of research and informational retrieval that are relevant to the practice of writing. Students have the opportunity to undertake supervised projects relevant to particular work situations. The Graduate Certificate in Writing provides ample opportunities for students to use different genres and styles and so become versatile writers able to communicate effectively and creatively in diverse professional and community contexts. The course is taken part-time but full-time study may be possible, subject to scheduling of units.

1. Admission to Candidature
(a) An applicant for admission to candidature shall have fulfilled all requirements for a degree of Bachelor of the University or shall have fulfilled the requirements for a degree or qualification of equivalent standing at another university or institution recognised by the faculty for this purpose; or
(b) shall provide evidence of successful tertiary study and relevant professional experience, to show to the satisfaction of the school that he or she is adequately prepared for the candidature.
2. Course Requirements
2.1. To qualify for the Graduate Certificate, a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points at 300 or 400 level, including at least 12 credit points at 400 level.
2.2. Except with the permission of the course coordinator, a candidate shall include at least 12 credit points from: COMM323/423, COMM332/532, COMM381/581; ECT303/403; ENCO306/406, ENCO329/429; ENGL304/404; and not more than 12 credit points from COMM386/486; ARTS301; ENCO308/408, ENCO310/410, ENCO326/426, ENCO328/428; THEA321; WORK300/500.
2.3. Another six credit point unit relevant to Writing may be substituted for one of the units listed in Rule 2.2.
3. Period of Candidature
3.1. Candidates shall complete course requirements in not more than four semesters.
3.2. Where a candidate has been granted advanced standing towards the Graduate Certificate, the school may reduce proportionately the period of candidature.
4. Advanced Standing
At the discretion of the course coordinator, a candidate may be granted advanced standing for units passed at this or another institution that have a reasonable degree of correspondence to units listed in Rule 2.1. Not more than six credit points of advanced standing may be granted under this rule.
