Why study the Bachelor of Nursing at UNE?

Nursing plays a key role in health services across the world, and professional nurses work in a wide variety of settings. The Bachelor of Nursing equips graduates with the key knowledge and skills necessary for the practice of nursing. Students who successfully complete the first two years of full-time study have the option to exit with an Advanced Diploma in Nursing, and eligibility to seek Enrolled Nurse status with the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW. Students who successfully complete 3 years of full-time study exit with a Bachelor of Nursing and eligibility to seek Registered Nurse status with the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW.
The course is offered full-time on-campus in 1st year, then it is offered full or part-time, via 'Blended Learning' mode* in 2nd and 3rd year. The course aims to give graduates an appreciation of the value of life-long learning and a firm foundation for further study at a postgraduate level.
A central aim is to prepare graduate nurses for enrolment and/or registration as professional nurses with the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW.
Students need to be fully vaccinated according to NSW Health requirements and provide evidence of their vaccination status before they can attend their first clinical placement. Prior to attendance at UNE students need to ensure that they are appropriately vaccinated or have commenced vaccination for adult diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, hepatitis B (all hepatitis B vaccinations must have been completed well before the commencement of the course), influenza, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), varicella (chicken pox).Vaccination for tuberculosis will be organised at UNE.
* Blended learning refers to a combination of mandatory on-campus intensive schools, structured online learning and clinical practice blocks

| Benefits | Students who do not meet traditional entry requirements for most undergraduate nursing courses may seek to enter the UNE nursing courses via interview. Students can exit from this degree on completion of year two with an Advanced Diploma in Nursing and be eligible to apply for Enrolled Nurse status with the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW. This enables them to seek employment as an Enrolled Nurse to assist them to cope financially with their final year of study if they opt to complete the Bachelor of Nursing. UNE has been at the forefront of nurse education longer than any other university in Australia. UNE was the first tertiary education provider in Australia to offer distance education for nurses.UNE nurse graduates are well respected within the profession, they are critical thinkers, and well prepared educationally for the professional challenges they will face. | Additional Requirements | Applicants must have a current First Aid Certificate which is WorkCover approved. This certificate should be completed before commencing study. Criminal Records Check: NSW Health has a policy that all staff, including candidates undertaking clinical placements, in positions dealing with children and other vulnerable people must undergo a criminal record check. This check will be conducted by the NSW Health and will be coordinated by the university. |

| Practical, Clinical or Work Experience | Candidates must complete 35 weeks of clinical practice, which is undertaken in each semester in health facilities in NSW. Clinical practice has been organised in block placements of two to eight weeks throughout the six semesters of the course. Clinical placements occur in most area health services of NSW. |

| Advanced Standing | Nursing students who seek Advanced Standing based on previous nursing studies undertaken at UNE or another university are assessed not just on unit equivalence but also on recency of study and clinical practice. If previous studies are more than three years old, students may be required to repeat portions of the equivalent unit, in particular the clinical practice requirements. This is in accordance with the requirements of the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW. |

| Honours | The Bachelor of Nursing with Honours is open to practising Registered Nurses with a Bachelor of Nursing degree with a grade point average specified by the Faculty. |

1. Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall:
(a) (i) be qualified for admission (see Undergraduate Admission Rules), and
(ii) if admitted on the basis of an Australian school-leaving qualification, have achieved a standard set by the school in English and a science subject in that school-leaving qualification; or
(b) be an Enrolled Nurse on List A in NSW and hold an endorsed Certificate in Nursing (Enrolled Nurse) with medication endorsement, or equivalent under the Australian Quality Framework; or
(c) hold the University of New England Advanced Diploma in Nursing or
(d) sucessfully undertake an interview conducted by a panel of UNE academic registered nurses.
2. Course Requirements
2.1. (a) To qualify for the award, candidates admitted under Rule 1.(a) shall pass 144 credit points as specified in Rules 2.1.(b) and 6.
(b) The course shall comprise:
(i) all units in Group 1;
(ii) 12 credit points from Group 2.
2.2. (a) To qualify for the award, candidates admitted under Rule 1.(b) shall pass 96 credit points as specified in Rules 2.2.(b) and 6.
(b) The course shall comprise:
(i) all units in Group 3;
(ii) 12 credit points from Group 2.
2.3. (a) To qualify for the award, candidates admitted under Rule 1.(c) shall pass 48 credit points as specified in Rules 2.3.(b) and 6.
(b) The course shall comprise:
(i) all units in Group 6;
(ii) six credit points from Group 2.

3. Advanced Diploma in Nursing Exit Point
Candidates who enrol in the Bachelor of Nursing and complete the requirements specified in Rules 3.1. and 3.2. may apply to exit with an Advanced Diploma in Nursing. Such graduates who then wish to complete the Bachelor of Nursing must re-apply for admission.
3.1. (a) To qualify for the award of Advanced Diploma in Nursing, candidates admitted under Rule 1.(a) shall pass 96 credit points as specified in Rules 3.1.(b) and 6.
(b) The course shall comprise all units in Group 4.
3.2. (a) To qualify for the award of Advanced Diploma in Nursing, candidates admitted under Rule 1.(b) shall pass 48 credit points as specified in Rules 3.2.(b) and 6.
(b) The course shall comprise all units in Group 5.
4. Period of Candidature
4.1. For candidates admitted under Rule 1.(a), the maximum period of candidature shall be:
(a) four years as a full-time candidate;
(b) seven years as a part-time candidate.
4.2. For candidates admitted under Rule 1.(b), the maximum period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a full-time candidate;
(b) five years as a part-time candidate.
4.3. For candidates admitted under Rule 1.(c), the maximum period of candidature shall be:
(a) two years as a full-time candidate;
(b) three years as a part-time candidate.
