Why study the Bachelor of Marine Science and Management at UNE?

This degree focuses on the major issues confronting Australian coastal habitats and resources and provides training in their ecology and sustainable management. The course commences in Armidale and students complete their third year of study at the National Marine Science Centre at Coffs Harbour, NSW, which is adjacent to the diverse habitats of the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Fieldwork in a range of natural environments is a strong focus of the course - this includes an excursion to the Great Barrier Reef. There is scope to develop skills such as scientific diving, boat handling and marine radio communications.
Career Opportunities
The balance between science and management content within the degree provides a wide range of employment opportunities in environmental fields. Examples include environmental officers in government (local, State and Federal) agencies and conservation organisations, planners, researchers and managers in marine parks, as well as various roles in fisheries research and policy development, and in commercial fisheries ventures (including aquaculture). Positions are also available in the private sector as environmental consultants.

| Honours | There is no Honours year for the Bachelor of Marine Science and Management, however, well-qualified graduates may apply to complete the Bachelor of Science with Honours. BSc(Hons) graduates who achieve the appropriate level of Honours are eligible to apply to enrol for a research Master degree or the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). |

Exit Pathways
Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 48 credit points or the Advanced Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 72 credit points.
Period of Candidature
The maximum period of candidature is 5 years as a Full-time candidate and 10 years as a Part-time candidate.
