Bachelor of Exercise Science
Why study the Bachelor of Exercise Science at UNE?
This course provides the basic knowledge foundation of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics. Students will then study how physical activity and exercise leads to the physiological adaptive processes improving cardiovascular and respiratory fitness as well as increased muscle strength and endurance. Combined with training in psychology and behaviour modification these skills will allow the graduate to design and implement fitness and training programs suitable for people from a wide range of backgrounds, from improving performance in elite athletes to helping people increase their level of fitness and well being. The work experience component requires at least 140 hours in at least two different settings.

Examples include exercise science specialist, respiratory scientist, cardiac technician, sport and recreation manager, occupational health and safety officer, rehabilitation adviser.

| Benefits | Currently the Bachelor of Exercise Science is not an accredited course. In 2011 UNE will be applying to ESSA (Exercise and Sports Science Australia) for preliminary accreditation of this course and it is expected that full accreditation will be in place before the first cohort of students graduate from this course. Course accreditation will enable graduates to become an Exercise Scientist subject to meeting the necessary specialist accreditation requirements set by ESSA for individual practitioners. Further details about the requirements to becoming an Exercise Scientist through ESSA can be found on their website at http://www.essa.org.au/. An Exercise Scientist can gain employment opportunities within the public health/ fitness/ lifestyle sector, private health/ fitness/ lifestyle sector, occupational health and safety and private practice (low -medium risk populations). |

| Practical, Clinical or Work Experience | Work experience will be undertaken as part of the two Practicum units EXSC250 Introduction to Fitness Training (70hrs) and EXSC350 Advanced Fitness Training (70hrs). These units will be a mixture of formal teaching combined with work experience. A component of the work experience requirements will in part be organised by staff but the majority will need to be arranged by the student in consultation with the unit coordinator and may be taken at any suitable facility anywhere in the country or internationally. |

Admission to Candidature
Normal admission requirements apply. Assumed knowledge is Mathematics and recommended study is Biology and/or Chemistry.
International students must satisfy the UNE English Language proficiency requirements as set out in the Policy on English Language Requirements for Admission.
Advanced Standing
Advanced standing may be granted in accordance with the UNE Advanced Standing Policy.
Period of Candidature
The maximum period of candidature shall be:
(a)
3 years as a full-time candidate;
(b)
8 years as a part-time candidate.
Program of Study
To qualify for the award a candidate shall pass a total of 144 credit points with not more than 60 credit points at 100-level.
Candidates shall complete an approved program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:

Exit Pathways
Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 48 credit points, the Advanced Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 72 credit points.
