| Unit Description |
The unit introduces students to the study of the behaviour of sound systems in languages, within mainstream (generative) phonological theory. Drawing on data from a range of languages we look at some recurrent problems in phonology, at the theories and models that have been proposed to explain them, and critically assess their implications for formal models of grammar. There is an emphasis on problem-solving and data analysis. Web access is essential. |
