Unit Description This unit focuses on the development of Europe between the end of the so-called dark ages in the eleventh century and the Renaissance of the fifteenth. It deals with the violent and bitter struggles between the Church and secular rulers, crusades, problems facing the medieval Empire, the development of feudalism, the consolidation of some kingdoms and the collapse of others and, finally, the steps taken by Europeans in the fifteenth century into a wider world beyond the seas.
