| Unit Description |
The theme of the unit, and the framework for the three literary texts set, is war and the occupation of France by enemy forces. The first of these is Guy de Maupassant's Boule de Suif, a short story first published in 1880, which takes place during the Prussian occupation of France, following on the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871. The second and third works have as a backdrop the Second World War (1939-1945) and the occupation of France by the Nazis: Simone de Beauvoir's Le Sang des autres (1947) and Irène Némirovsky's Suite française (2004). |
