Unit Description

Archaeology is a very practical discipline and field work is both exciting and informative. This unit is based around a field project. Students attend a six-day residential school. Readings, exercises and field experience introduce archaeological field work. Topics include excavation, legislative requirements, logistical planning, map interpretation, map-making, negotiation, samping, site formation, site recording, surveying and stratigraphy. Differerent field areas used every year depending on availability and the research interests of staff.
