Unit Description

Australia faces growing challenges in the area of plant biosecurity due to the increase in trade, travel and tourism, which increases the risk of plant diseases and pests. The introduction of plant diseases and pests has the potential to have serious consequences for the agricultural industries. Furthermore our natural ecosystems and natural resource base may be under threat from the introduction of pests and disease with the potential to decimate our unique flora. This unit aims at covering issues relevant to biosceurity of plant-based industries and natural ecosystems. Topics covered include pathogens and crop bioterrrorism, insect pests, noxious weeds, transgenic plants, PC2 facilities, phyto-sanitary regulations and risk assessment.
