Overview

On campus study is completed at the National Marine Science Centre in Coffs Harbour NSW (www.nmsc.edu.au/).

The award provides academic and professional training in some of the key topics in marine science and management. This includes updating the knowledge and skills of candidates who have previous training in this field.

Entry Requirements

The minimum requirement for admission to candiature is a three-year Bachelor degree including the basic sciences chemistry, biology and statistics.

Course Rules

1. Admission to Candidature
An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Marine Science and Management shall:

(a) have completed all the requirements for admission to the degree of Bachelor of Science; or
(b) have completed at least 12 credit points towards the Graduate Diploma in Marine Science and Management and have a satisfactory academic record; or
(c) have fulfilled all of the requirements for admission to a degree or other qualification acceptable to the school as sufficient qualification for admission to candidature.

2. Appointment of Supervisor
At the time of admission to candidature a supervisor, who shall be a member of the staff of the University of the rank of lecturer, or higher, and who shall be responsible for coordinating and overseeing the candidate’s study program, shall be appointed by the school.

3. Course Requirements for the Master of Marine Science and Management
A student shall complete a study program comprising units counting 48 credit points of which at least 36 credit points must be at 500 or 600-level.

Unless otherwise determined by the school in special circumstances, the course work program shall be completed in 12 months of full-time study or in not more than eight consecutive semesters of part-time study.

4. Advanced Standing
The maximum advanced standing shall be for units counting 24 credit points wich are deemed to be equivalent to units offered by the University and approved for the course comprising:

  • 24 credit points from units completed towares an awarded Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in a relevant area offered by the University; or
    24 credit points for units completed from another institution and not counted towards an awarded qualification; or
    12 credit points for units completed towards an awarded qualification from another University; and
    6 credit points on the basis of considerable professional experience.

Advanced standing shall not be awarded for NR691 or NR695.

5. Exit Pathways
Candidates may be eligible to exit with the Graduate Certificate in Marine Science and Management on completion of 24 credit points.

 

Career Opportunities

The qualification will be recognised in the market place as appropriate for consultants and managers dealing with marine and estuarine ecosystems.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing may be granted for a maximum of 24 credit points on the basis previous study completed at a recognised tertiary institution. This can include six credit points of advanced standing which may be granted on the basis of relevant professional experience.

Articulation from the Graduate Diploma in Marine Science and Management

On completion of the Graduate Diploma, students are able to articulate to the Master of Marine Science and Management with 24 credit points (no more than 12 credit points at undergraduate level) of advanced standing for units completed towards the Graduate Diploma.
