Domestic Students

1.     Admission to Candidature
1.1.      Admission to candidature shall be determined by the Higher Degrees Research Committee on the recommendation of the Head of School of Law or nominee.
1.2.      Except with the permission of the Higher Degrees Research Committee, applicants for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Laws by Research shall have fulfilled all of the requirements for admission to:
            (a)  a degree of Bachelor of Laws of an Australian university; or
            (b)  an equivalent qualification.

2.     Appointment of Supervisor
        Upon approval of an application for admission to candidature, the Higher Degrees Research Committee, on the recommendation of the Head of School of Law or nominee, shall appoint a supervisor, who shall be a member of the teaching or research staff of the University or an associate of the University, of the rank of Academic Level B, or higher. The supervisor shall advise and supervise the candidate during the period of candidature. The supervisor shall report to the Higher Degrees Research Committee bi-annually on the progress of the candidate, if required to do so by the Higher Degrees Research Committee, and carry out any other duties delegated by the Higher Degrees Research Committee. The supervisor may recommend to the Higher Degrees Research Committee that the candidate be withdrawn from candidature. In such cases, the candidate shall be given the opportunity to show cause why such action should not be taken.

3.     Approval of Course of Study
        After admission to candidature, candidates shall have the dissertation topic approved by the Head of the School of Law or nominee.

4.     Requirements for the Degree
38.4.1. A candidate for the degree shall:
            (a)  complete the course work unit LLM 600;
            (b)  enrol in the unit LLM 622 and pursue research for the degree under the direction of his or her supervisor;
            (c)  submit a dissertation, to the value of 42 credit points, of not more than 40 000 words, excluding appendices, on a subject chosen by the candidate and approved by the head of the school or nominee; and
            (d)  complete the above requirements, in the case of a full-time candidate, in not more than 18 months from the date of commencement of candidature and in all other cases not less than two years and not more than four years from the date of commencement of candidature.

5.     Extension of Time and Leave of Absence
        In exceptional circumstances the Higher Degrees Research Committee, on the recommendation of the head of the school or nominee, may vary the requirements of Rules 4.1.(c) or 4.1.(d) by:
(a)       granting leave of absence from candidature for a period of not more than 12 months and the period of such leave shall not be counted as part of the prescribed time of candidature; or
(b)       extending the period of candidature for a period of not more than 12 months.

6.     Advanced Standing
        At the discretion of the Head of the School or nominee, a candidate may be granted advanced standing for LLM 600, passed prior to admission to candidature, provided that this unit has been successfully completed towards a postgraduate qualification at this or another University; or through other significant learning which the faculty considers equivalent to LLM 600.

7.     Admission to the Degree
7.1.      A candidate who completes the degree program specified in this chapter shall be eligible for admission to the degree of Master of Laws by Research.
7.2.      The degree of Master of Laws by Research may be awarded to candidates at the level of Honours, Class I or Class II; or at the level of Pass.

8.     Other Rules
        The relevant provisions of Faculty Rules 2.8., 2.11., 2.12., 2.13. and 2.14. pertaining to the Master of Economics shall apply.
