Why study the Master of Commerce at UNE?

The Master of Commerce is a fee-paying, coursework only program, which provides an excellent means of obtaining advanced-level qualifications in business studies. The Master of Commerce provides a broadening course for those students wishing to extend their knowledge of business generally, or provides for specific career enhancement for those students seeking a greater concentration in a particular discipline. Students can enrol in areas such as accounting, finance and entrepreneurship and agribusiness.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission in the Master of Commerce, a candidate must have completed a three year degree or its equivalent in a relevant discipline.

Applicants considered to be inadequately prepared for candidature may be advised to enrol in the Graduate Diploma or a Masters Qualifying program. Depending on circumstances and performance, such a candidate may be eligible to transfer to the Masters program.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing may be granted for units completed at this University that have not been counted towards another qualification. The maximum advanced standing granted for units that have been successfully completed towards a postgraduate qualification at this or another university or institution is 24 credit points. Each application is decided individually, and applicants must provide documentation to support their application for advanced standing in each unit.

These Course Rules & Plans are ONLY to be used if you Commenced, Transferred or Changed Versions in the Master of Commerce in 2009.

1. Admission to Candidature
1.1. The course is available on a fee paying basis only.

1.2.  Applicants for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Commerce shall:
(a) have fulfilled the requirements for admission to a degree or qualification of equivalent standing at this or another university or tertiary institution, provided that the degree or qualification

(i) is accepted by the school on the advice of the course co-ordinator as sufficient qualification for admission to the proposed course of study, and
(ii) required a minimum of three years’ full-time study; or

(b) be accepted by the school on the advice of the course co-ordinator as satisfying the requirements of the Qualifying Course for Admission to Candidature for the Degree of Master.

2. Approval of Course of Study
After admission to candidature, a candidate shall have a course of study approved by the head of school or nominee.

3. Requirements for the Master of Commerce Degree
3.1. Except as provided in Rule 5. a candidate shall:
(a) follow a course of study prescribed by the school as set out in Rule 3.2.;
(b) complete such written assignments and tasks as are prescribed and pass any examination as is prescribed in each unit of the course of study.

3.2. A candidate may proceed to the Master of Commerce by course work to a minimum value of 48 credit points. Except with the permission of the school the course of study shall comprise the units in the relevant major discipline listed in Rule 4.

3.3. Except as provided in Rule 3.4., a candidate shall:
(a) as a full-time candidate, satisfy the above requirements of Rule 3.2. in not more than three trimesters or three semesters from the date of commencement of candidature;
(b) as a part-time candidate, satisfy the above requirements of Rule 3.2. in not less than three trimesters or three semesters duration from the date of commencement of candidature and not more than eight trimesters or eight semesters.

3.4. In exceptional circumstances, the school may vary the requirements of Rule 3.3. by extending the period of candidature for a period or periods totaling not more two trimesters of 15 weeks’ duration.

4. Majors for the Master of Commerce Degree
Except with the permission of the school on the recommendation of the course co-ordinator, the course of study shall include units to a value of 48 credit points in the relevant major discipline defined as follows:

4.1. (a) Accounting and Finance (off-campus) — GSB 601, 602, 603, 604, 605, 606, 692, 707, 717, 725, 741, 751.

4.1. (b) Accounting and Finance (on-campus) — at least 36 credit points from the following units: AFM412, 415, 416, 417, 422, 424, 431, 432, 472; ECON405, 474; LS391, 392; MM402, 403, 422. And no more than 12 credit points (at a minimum of 300-level) from other units offered by the University.

4.2. Human Resource Management – GSB 714, 734, 738, 739, and 24 credit points from the following units: GSB 600, 702, 722, 740, 747, 751, 797.

4.3. Management – GSB 600, 721, 731, 738, and 24 credit points from the following units: GSB 691, 702, 711, 717, 724, 734, 739, 740, 741, 742, 743, 751, 797.

4.4. Marketing – GSB 731, 732, 736, 737, and 24 credit points from the following units: GSB 600, 656, 702, 707, 717, 741, 751, 797.

5. Advanced Standing
5.1. At the discretion of the course coordinator, on the recommendation of the head of school or nominee, a candidate may be granted advanced standing for course work units only, passed prior to admission to candidature, provided that such units have reasonable correspondence with units offered by the faculty for the Master of Commerce for up to 24 credit points, except as provided by Advanced Standing Rule 3 Rule 3.4.(d), on the basis of units that have been successfully completed towards a postgraduate qualification at this or another University; or through other significant learning which the school considers equivalent to units prescribed for the Master of Commerce.

5.2. Advanced Standing Rule 3 Rule 3.3. does not apply to candidates completing the major defined in Rule 4.5. and granted advanced standing in accordance with Rule 5.1.
