Master of Arts
1. Admission to Candidature
1.1. Admission to candidature shall be determined by the course coordinator.
1.2. An applicant for admission to candidature shall have fulfilled all requirements for a degree of Bachelor of the University or shall have fulfilled the requirements for a degree or qualification of equivalent standing at another University or institution recognised by the course coordinator for this purpose.
2. Course Requirements
2.1. To qualify for the award of Master of Arts a candidate shall pass units to the value of 48 credit points at 400 level or above approved by the course coordinator.
2.2. Candidates must include units to the value of at least 24 credit points from units listed within a major. With the approval of the relevant head of school, WORK 500 may substitute for one of the units in a major.
2.3. Candidates may include units to the value of not more than 24 credit points selected from individual dissertation units within their program.
2.4. There is no limit on the number of reading course units a candidate may undertake, providing reading course unit pre-requisites are complied with.
3. Units Offered
3.1. (a) Candidates shall pursue a course of study approved by the course coordinator including a minimum of 24 credit points selected from one of the following majors. If a major has Prescribed Units these must all be completed; each Listed Unit is optional
(b) Additional units can also be selected from a set of Master of Arts Non-Major units. These do not contribute to the requirement of a 24 credit point major.
3.2. With the approval of the course coordinator candidates may include any other 400-level or above units from other areas of the university, to the value of no more than 18 credit points.
4. Period of Candidature
4.1. (a) The expected period of candidature for full-time candidates to complete requirements is two semesters.
(b) Part-time candidates shall complete requirements in not more than eight semesters.
4.2. Where a candidate has been granted advanced standing, towards the degree, the course coordinator may reduce proportionately the period of candidature.
5. Advanced Standing
Maximum of 24 credit points, providing units passed have reasonable correspondence to units of coursework available toward the degree and were not part of the degree on which admission to the Master of Arts was based.
6. Exit Pathways
Students can exit with the Graduate Certificate in Arts upon successful completion of 24 credit points.
7. Award of Master of Arts
Graduating students in the Master of Arts who have successfully completed at least 30 credit points in one major as defined in Rule 3.1. of the Master of Arts may request that the major appear on their testamur.
