Why study the Juris Doctor at UNE?
The Juris Doctor is a professional qualification enabling graduates to practice law in all Australian jurisdictions, or pursue a career in business or Government. After completion of academic qualifications in law, entry to legal practice also requires the completion of a Practical Legal Training (PLT) course. The Juris Doctor is designed for graduates from disciplines other than law and lawyers with a civil law degree. Outstanding students may graduate with honours. The cost of a Juris Doctor may be a tax deduction for some students. The Juris Doctor may also give recognition to prior learning in law or legal studies in a civil law jurisdiction. The Juris Doctor is not a doctoral-level award and graduates are not entitled to use the honorific title 'Doctor'.

| Benefits | This is an approved Student Income Support course. Eligible students may apply for Youth Allowance or Austudy. The Juris Doctor is accredited by the Legal Practitioners Admission Board of NSW for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW and mutual recognition legislation extends admission to other Australian jurisdictions. After completion of academic qualifications in Law, entry to legal practice also requires the completion of a Practical Legal Training (PLT) course. Summer Semester provides an opportunity for students to fast-track their academic progression or to catch up on units to complete the degree. A selection of units is offered off-campus during the normal semester break from November to February, enabling students to study from home to accelerate their progress towards graduation. Law Students' Society: There is an active Law Students' Society at UNE, which organises inter-varsity mooting and social activities for students. The Society also represents the interests of Law students through its elected representatives on School Committees and provides a range of services for Law alumni as well as facilitating links between legal practitioners and students Pathway: There is a pathway to complete a Masters of Laws (LLM) by completing four additional LLM units. |

| Advanced Standing | The School of Law gives credit for prior study in any Australian program that meets the academic requirements for admission as a legal practitioner (including courses offered by the NSW Legal Practitioner's Admission Board or its equivalent). Advanced standing cannot be given for work experience or legal studies that are not part of a course that meets admission requirements. | Honours | Juris Doctor with Honours (JDHons): Students who have achieved a grade point average of 5.5 or better in the preceding eight law units (P=4, C=5, D=6, HD=7) may be admitted to the Honours Program in the final year of study. The program is based on a thesis of 15,000 words. The honours result is based in the grade awarded for the thesis plus grades for the best 15 units towards the degree. |

1. Admission to Candidature
Applicants for admission to the Degree of Juris Doctor shall have fulfilled all the requirements for admission to a degree, or qualification of equivalent standing, accepted by the school as sufficient qualification for admission to the course and obtainable after a minimum of three years’ full-time study or its equivalent.
2. General Requirements for the Degree
2.1. To complete requirements for admission to the degree of Juris Doctor a candidate shall complete:
(a) compulsory units as described in Rule 5.1. to the value of 114 credit points; and
(b) elective units identified in Rule 5.1. to the value of 30 credit points.
3. Other Requirements
3.1. Except with the permission of the course coordinator the maximum number of units which a full-time student may complete in any semester shall be four, and in any one year, eight.
3.2. Except with the permission of the course coordinator the maximum number of units which a part-time student may complete in any semester shall be two, and in any on year, four.
4. Requirements for Honours
A candidate may proceed to Honours if they have satisfied the same rules as for the Bachelor of Laws with Honours.
5. Units Offered
5.1. The following 24 units shall qualify towards the degree:

5.2. The school shall not be obliged to offer in any year all of the units listed in Rule 5.1. The units offered in any year shall be determined by the school.
