Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science

Why study the Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science at UNE?

Full-time students can only start in 1st semester (on and off-campus)

Part-time students can start in either 1st or 2nd semester (on and off-campus)

The Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science is the first award level of a fully articulated program which gives qualified applicants the opportunity for study at three progressive levels: Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science, Graduate Diploma in Geographic Information Science; Master of Geographic Information Science.

The Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science is designed to provide basic academic and professional training in the use and application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing for graduates who wish to increase their knowledge in this area.

Students can design their own program of study, in consultation with academic staff, based on their background knowledge and area of interest. In addition to the core units, students are able to select two units across areas of study.

The Graduate Certificate will be awarded at the level of Pass, Pass with Credit, Pass with Distinction or Pass with High Distinction depending on the level of academic achievement.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate will be qualified for professional positions dealing with GIS and remote sensing.

Benefits

On completion of the Graduate Certificate, students are able to articulate to the Graduate Diploma. All units counted towards the Graduate Certificate will count towards the Graduate Diploma.

Articulation to the Master of Geographic Information Science

On completion of the Graduate Diploma, students are able to articulate to the Master program with 24 credit points (no more than 12 credit points at undergraduate level) of advanced standing for units completed towards the Graduate Diploma.

Entry Requirements

The requirement for admission to candidature is a three-year Bachelor degree with a knowledge of the basic sciences - biology, chemistry and statistics.

Applicants with other qualifications and professional experience will also be considered.

Advanced Standing

The maximum advanced standing shall be for units counting 6 credit points which are deemed to be equivalent to units offered by University and approved for the course comprising:

a. 6 credit points for units completed at the University; or

b. 6 credit points for units completed from another institution and not counted towards an awarded qualification; or

c. 6 credit points for units completed towards an awarded qualification from another University; or

d. 6 credit points on the basis of considerable professional experience.

These Course Rules & Plans are ONLY to be used if you Commenced, Transferred or Changed Versions in the Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science in 2009.

1. Admission to Candidature
An applicant for admission to candidature for the certificate shall:
(a) have fulfilled all the requirements for admission to a degree, or an equivalent qualification, acceptable to the school as sufficient qualification for admission to candidature; or
(b) satisfy the school by means of other qualifications and/or relevant experience that adequate preparation for candidature has been made.

2. Program of Study
Each program of study shall comprise of units at 200-level or above to the value of 24 credit points.

3. Requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science
A candidate shall complete a study program including:
(a) EM 334/534 and NR 331/531; and
(b) units to the value of 12 credit points approved by the Course Coordinator.

4. Period of Candidature
Unless otherwise determined by the school in special circumstances, the course work program shall be completed in one semester of full-time study or in not more than four consecutive semesters of part-time study.

5. Advanced Standing
The maximum advanced standing shall be for units counting 6 credit points which are deemed to be equivalent to units offered by University and approved for course comprising:
(a) 6 credit points for units completed at the University; or
(b) 6 credit points for units completed from another institution and not counted towards an awarded qualifications; or
(c) 6 credit points for units completed towards an awarded qualification from another University; and
(d) 6 credit points on the basis of considerable professional experience.

6. Exemption
6.1. A candidate may be granted exemption from units counting up to 12 credit points on the basis of his or her previous completion of units prescribed for the course work program concerned or equivalent units.
6.2. Such a candidate shall complete alternative units prescribed by the school on the recommendation of the course coordinator concerned.

7. Award of Certificate
A successful candidate shall be awarded the certificate at one of four levels, Pass, Credit, Distinction or High Distinction.
