Overview

This course is designed to provide students with a coherent program of study in a range of disciplines in science. Graduates will have a broad scientific background to assist with future employment or to pursue further study. Students may complete one of the approved majors design their own program of study in consultation with academic staff, taking into account their background knowledge and interests.

Graduates are awarded the Diploma in the course work program completed, for example, those who complete the Biomedical Science program will be awarded the Diploma in The Sciences (Biomedical Science).

Applicants should have completed the Certificate in Science or equivalent but applicants with other qualifications and relevant experience will be considered.

Course Rules

1. Admission to Candidature

An applicant for the Diploma shall:

(a) hold a certificate of the school, or equivalent qualification; or

(b) have satisfied the school by means of qualifications and/or related experience, that the equivalent standard of Rule 1.(a) has been achieved.

2. Program of Study

2.1. The student shall:

(a) pursue a course work program approved in advance by the relevant course coordinator and comprising units from those listed in the rules for the Bachelor of Computer Science or Bachelor of Environmental Science or Bachelor of Natural Resources or Bachelor of Sciences.

(b) complete one of the prescribed course work programs listed in Rule 3.

2.2. The program shall comprise units with a total value of 48 credit points normally chosen from those offered at 100 and 200 level with a maximum of 12 credit points at 300 level.

2.3. In special circumstances, and with the approval of the relevant course coordinator, other units available from subjects offered within the University may be substituted for one or more of the units approved for the program.

Diploma in Science graduates will have a broad scientific background appropriate for further study or to assist with future employment in a range of areas requiring a knowledge of the basic sciences.

Advanced Standing Advanced standing will be granted for units which are deemed to be equivalent to units offered by the University and approved for the course as follows: a. a maximum of 12 credit points for units completed at another institution which have not been counted towards another qualification; or b. no limit will apply to advanced standing which is granted for units counted towards an undergraduate certificate course offered by the University; or c. no limit will apply to advanced standing which is granted for units completed at the University and which have not been counted towards another qualification.

On completion of the Diploma students may enrol for a Bachelor degree (the actual degree will be dependent on the program of study completed) and are able to count units already completed towards either the Diploma.
