Bachelor of Special Education (Primary)/Bachelor of Disability Studies

Why study the Bachelor of Special Education (Primary)/Bachelor of Disability Studies at UNE?

This four year course is fully available in distance education mode. It is designed to prepare graduates to be registered as primary school teachers and special education teachers within New South Wales and therefore across Australia. In addition, the program prepares graduates to work in the field of disability services. In all it contains 120 days of integrated professional field based experience across primary schools, special/inclusive education settings, and disability service locations. The course focuses on the three linked domains of: (1) all of the required primary education curriculum and content areas; (2) the special education areas of programming, language development, communication, and behaviour; and (3) disability service delivery and programming across the life span. The course contains units of study drawn from the eight main discipline areas of: Education, Health, Counselling, Psychology, Law, Curriculum Studies, Business Studies, and Disability Studies.

Career Opportunities

To prepare teachers to work in the special education field in an inclusive setting (local primary school), or a special class (within a local primary school or within a special school). In addition the capacity to work in the area of disability services as a programme coordinator, educator, supervisor and other fields covering community participation, recreation and leisure, accommodation, employment and day programs.

Additional Requirements

If admitted on the basis of an Australian school-leaving qualification, have achieved a standard set by the Combined Degrees in Education Management Committee in English and Mathematics in that school leaving qualification.

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

There are 7 professional experience units (120 days in total) in the course.

Prohibited Employment Declaration and Probity Checks: In response to the New South Wales Department of Education and Training's requirement to meet legal obligations in respect to the Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 and the Child Protection (prohibited Employment) Act 1998, the Faculty of Education, Health and Professional Studies has guidelines regarding students undertaking field experience. All students are required to declare whether they are a prohibited person by completing a Prohibited Employment Declaration prior to their professional experience placement.

In addition, the New South Wales Department of Education and Training has introduced probity (criminal record) checks for all student teachers participating in unsupervised situations with school students. Education Queensland and ACT Department of Education require probity checks for all students undertaking any school experience in Queensland or ACT. Probity checks may be carried out prior to students undertaking any school experience. Candidates should be aware that they will be subject to probity checks on behalf of potential employers after completing the course and prior to receiving clearance to function as an independent classroom teacher.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall:
(a) be qualified for admission (see Undergraduate Admission Rules), and
(b) if admitted on the basis of an Australian school-leaving qualification, have achieved a standard set by the Combined Degrees in Education Management Committee in English and Mathematics in that school leaving qualification.
