Why study the Bachelor of Livestock Science at UNE?
As climatic conditions change, increasing proportions of marginally arable country will be sown to pasture. Graduates who understand the nutritional needs of livestock, selection for better performing animals and production of pastures needed to optimise economic and environmental outcomes will be in strong demand. This is the only Livestock Science degree in Australia and places emphasis on producing graduates who understand livestock systems and end products, from feedlots through to extensive grazing systems. Graduates will be capable of meeting the future challenges of livestock industries through strong scientific and industry knowledge and excellent communication skills. Students who obtain good grades are able to take advantage of overseas student exchange programs. Students who complete a research project in the fourth year will be considered for the award of Honours. The major completed will appear on the academic record and testamur.

| Benefits | Armidale is considered one of the top locations in the world for studying agriculture and livestock. Most of the teaching is provided by internationally recognised staff and. UNE has excellent animal house facilities and there is ready access to adjacent rural properties for teaching and research. The picturesque New England area is a premium fine wool stud and wool growing district. It is also close to many cattle properties and the Beef CRC feedlot. Other groups located at Armidale include the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU), LAMBPLAN, Merino Genetic Services, headquarters of the Sheep Industry, Beef Quality and Poultry Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs), CSIRO Livestock Industries 'Chiswick' research centre, ILRIC, Select Breeding Services, Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) and headquarters of the Angus and Poll Hereford Societies. There is excellent demand for the graduates of a Livestock Science degree. A survey commissioned by AWI and the Sheep Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) of industry employers of animal breeding, health and nutrition and sheep and wool scientists shows graduates to be highly employable domestically and internationally across a broad range of disciplines. Many undertake postgraduate training or immediately enter the industry on graduation. BLivestockSc graduates are eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology. Fully credited exchange programs of one semester are in place with international universities. BLivestockSc graduates are eligible to enrol for a range of Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and course work Master programs. |

| Entry Requirements | Normal admission requirements apply. Assumed knowledge is Mathematics and recommended study is Chemistry. For students without the recommended background knowledge, the Faculty offers a Foundation unit in Chemistry and Mathematics. |

| Practical, Clinical or Work Experience | 24 weeks of approved practical industry experience during university vacation periods. |

| Advanced Standing | Advanced standing may be granted on the basis of previous study completed at a recognised tertiary institution. |

| Honours | The degree may be awarded with Honours. The Honours level is based on grades achieved in the second, third and fourth years of the degree including the Honours project which is completed in the final year. BLivestockSc(Hons) graduates who achieve the appropriate level of Honours are eligible to apply to enrol for a research Master degree or the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). |

| Scholarships | Industry-funded (Sheep CRC) scholarships are currently worth $9000 per year for four years, and are awarded on the basis of a minimum UAI of 90 and an interview. There are also many other UNE scholarships available. |

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in Agriculture on completion of 48 credit points, the Advanced Diploma in Agriculture on completion of 72 credit points, and the Bachelor of Science (Crop/Animal Sciences) on completion of 144 credit points.
Period of Candidature
The maximum period of candidature is 6 years as a full-time candidate or 12 years as a part-time candidate.
