Why study the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) at UNE?
After completing a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood ),or its equivalent graduates may apply to continue studying for a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood ). The course focuses on the birth to eight year old age group and is designed to be responsive to the diverse employment opportunities of early childhood teachers and related services. There is a primary pathway option within the BEd (EC) course which will continue only for 2009 applicants. Please note that a pathway for primary teaching will not be available for new students in 2010.

Teacher Registration: Students should note that teacher registration requirements vary from state to state. This course degree structure is based on NSW Department of Community Services guidelines under the Childcare Regulations and the NSW Institute of Teachers guidelines for teacher registration (website: www.nswteachers.nsw.edu.au/). It is the responsibility of each student to check their eligibility to work and teach with the relevant state authorites (including students who intend to teach in NSW)

| Practical, Clinical or Work Experience | Three 'professional practice' experiences of ten days each are integral to this course. These block days are informed by the eight (8) content units and are companions to the units. Each professional practice will be undertaken outside a student's own worksite or previous workplaces. For 2009, if you are following the K-2 primary pathway, your 'professional practice' experiences will be completed in early years classrooms in primary school. Prohibited Employment Declaration and Probity Checks: In response to the NSW (DoCS) Department of Community Services requirements and the Department of Education and Training's requirement to meet legal obligations in respect to the Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 and the Child Protection (Prohibited Employment) Act 1998, the University has guidelines regarding students undertaking field experience. All students are required to declare whether they are a prohibited person by completing a Prohibited Employment Declaration prior to their professional experience placement. In addition, the New South Wales Department of Education and Training has introduced probity (criminal record) checks for all student teachers participating in unsupervised situations with school students. Education Queensland and the ACT Department of Education require probity checks for all students undertaking any school experience in Queensland or the ACT. Students should be aware that they will be subject to criminal record checks on behalf of potential NSW employers after completing the course and prior to receiving clearance as an independent classroom teacher or staff member in an early childhood centre. |

1. Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall hold a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood comprising of three years of study recognised by the School as suitable for entry into the course.
2. Award of the Degree
Candidates who meet the course requirements listed under Rule 3 shall be awarded the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood).
3. Course Requirements
To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) a candidate who has been admitted under Rule 1 shall pass 48 credit points including all units in Group 1A and one unit in Group 1B.
4. Period of Candidature
For candidates admitted under Rules 1.(a) the maximum period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a part-time candidate;
(b) one year as a full-time candidate.
5. Progress and Conduct
5.1. Refer to the University General Rule on Academic Progress.
5.2. Failure to meet professional experience and practice teaching requirements shall be deemed to be unsatisfactory progress.
6. Code of Ethics
Candidates are required to abide by the Code of Ethics for general contact with schools and professional experience as laid down by the School.
7. Units Offered
All units listed below for this award have a value of six credit points except where indicated after a colon.
