Unit Description

This unit examines processes and issues integrating the principles of natural science, engineering, legislation, and economics as they relate to the marine environment; it explains the coupling and feedback mechanisms linking the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. Case studies illustrate the ecological and economic implications of environmental policy decisions. Assessment includes assignments, a seminar, and quizzes during the residential school. MSM 501 is based on the senior undergraduate unit MSM 301 with additional load consisting of extensions to the assignments. Candidates will be required to show a greater level of understanding of the unit material than that required at 300 level. Students who complete MSM 301 are not permitted to enrol for MSM 501.
