| Unit Description |
Family law is relevant for students interested in legal practice in general or specialist firms. In practice it is a highly procedural area of law requiring a sound knowledge of both case law and statute. It is also an area subject to vigorous policy debates. The changing nature of society's interpretation of 'what is a family', as well as the constantly changing nature and composition of Australian society in the last few decades, makes family law a volatile and contentious subject. With the advent of the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth) came radical changes to family law. No longer was this to be a fault jurisdiction. The absence of the notion of fault in family law matters has attracted much comment. |
