Unit Description

This unit examines the scope and application of procedures for the resolution of disputes which are alternative to the judicial process. Topics covered include alternative dispute resolution in civil matters, such as arbitration, supervised negotiation, resolution of factual issues and conciliation and mediation. Informal dispute resolution in criminal law, the relationship between alternative dispute resolution and the courts, international perspectives and the future of alternative dispute resolution is also considered.
