Unit Description

This unit analyses and describes grammatical structure, building on what linguists have learned about language in general while attending to the unique features of the world's languages. While the focus is on analysis, rather than theory, we cover some of the core ideas and methods of generative syntax including argument structure, raising and control, and constituency. Students are encouraged to think critically about the implications of a formal model of grammar, and to apply the methods learnt to a range of data from languages other than English. There is an emphasis on problem-solving and data analysis. Web access is essential.
